Ranger's Report

Inline

November has been a very exciting month for Glen Afric. We have had lots of new offspring born on the farm; zebra, warthog, impala and bless buck.

- Mupani the Hippo

Mupani has been very active this month, especially at night, where she has been leaving the reserve and going to visit our neighbours in the area. It was to our great surprise that we had a call from a local to say that she had been spotted on her way to Lesedi Cultural Village. A team and a tow truck tried to bring her home but she was very happy where she was. Eventually she decided to make her own way home that evening and is now back in dam three.

- The Zebra

One of our baby male zebra had a bit of a run in the Jack this month and has been recovering in the quarantine station. It was a little bit touch and go to begin with but he is now doing very well and Jono our quarantine manager is looking after him.

- The Warthog

Two litters of baby warthog have been born in the last few weeks, on group of 3 and one of 5.

- Hamley the Giraffe

Hamley has been causing all sort of havoc this month, he decided that it would be a good idea to stand on a car and put a huge scratch in the bonnet. So do be warned if you see him don't stop and say "hello" or your car may be in jeopardy!

- The Ostrich

One of our ostrich pairs has just started nesting, and there is already a clutch of eggs there. The female is very aggressive at the moment which is a good sign as shows she is protecting them. Fingers crossed we have some chicks in mid January. It takes 42 days for an ostrich egg to hatch. We will keep you posted on their progress.

- Bully the Elephant

Bully has been up mischief, he's managed to escape from the elephant house where he pulled down two trees near the Boma. His handler Lucas is on leave at the moment and Bully is missing him terribly and seems to be taking it out on the trees! Hopefully when Lucas comes back he will calm down a little bit.

- Snakes

One of our housekeepers came across a snake at the Lodge, the rangers where called in to remove it and it was suspected to be a cobra, but thank goodness it was a harmless mole snake, unless of course you are a mouse! It was captured and released at the West Gate well away from the Lodge.

If you have a question for either of the rangers please do not hesitate to get in contact with them.  You can email Jared or Elias at  info@glenafric.co.za
